From the Manufacturer
It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

By Amber
I purchased a black pair and they are incredibly comfortable and the perfect style I was searching for. I was apprehensive of the new soles that are found on these boots as I've been wearing Docs for 20 years now and have become accustomed to their distinctive feel and was hesitant to wear anything new or different. I tried the second gen sole in the 90s and despised them. I was happy to see Doc continue to make the original sole. In the end I tried them and am glad I did!
They feel instantly broke in. The side walls of the leather uppers are soft and supple which took my original pair of docs over three or four years to achieve this level of comfort. When laced all the way up they for fit your lower calf much like a moccasin style apache boot or really worn combat boot would.
I am very impressed with the updated sole design. It feels more "grippy" than the older sole design. I live in a humid climate where concrete floors "sweat" moisture making it very slippery and I would slide very often with my old docs but these have done great so far. Even with the changes you can still feel the trademark "bouncing soles" of this boots predecessors, perhaps even more than the original soles. If you have very high arches you will need an insert. I have high arches and found them to be only adequate in this area but no more than that.
Bottom line, very stylish and comfortable. Another win for Dr. Marten.

By Arthur
I have been wearing Dr. M's for the past 25 years and always loved them. I usually buy the 8761 style. Last pair I bought about 5 years ago and noticed it was made in china. I new something was up when they were about half the cost. Anyway be very careful when you buy Dr. Martens. I would only suggest the ones that are made in UK. This boot I bought because I wanted to gamble again and see where it was made. Asia again. They are nothing like the real Dr. Martens. The soles are not bouncy and the leather is rough compared to the ones made in UK. If you never wore the UK version. Do your self a favor and spring for the extra money. You will never go back to the asia made ones. They do still make the vintage 1490 in the UK. Check them out over these.

By gplayerzone
Sadly, the boots fell far short of any reasonable expectation. First they were delivered to the wrong address. I went out looking for them and just happened to see the Amazon box sitting on the porch of an abandoned house up the street from mine. ( Not Amazon's fault ) When I got the package home the disappointment continued. The soles were super heavy duty, but the uppers were constructed of such thin leather that I don't see how they could stand up for very long. Even with all that I might possibly have given them a go, but they were way too big. The English conversion chart says that the British size 12 is the equivalent of an American size 13. If that's so, then these were mislabeled. They were 14s or maybe even 14 1/2s. Even with the laces pulled as tight as I could get them, I could still pull them off! I still love Amazon, I just wish that some of the vendors would give a better representation and truer description of their products.
